Late to the party: RPGaDay 2019 prompt 21

“Vast”

File this one with prompt 5 as well, however maybe a bit more to say here.

So I can often have a problem in that I plan too much, or dream up settings and games that are just too big, too much going on, not enough for players to actually latch on to. I struggle with vastness over specifics.

I think that was one of the main criticisms for Planescape as a setting when it was around. It’s too vast, every Plane is infinite and there’s too much to do and too much going on at once.
It’s a fair criticism, I think.

So how do I solve my problems? Well, really I need to focus more on Session Zero and looking at what players want, how we’ll get there and everything. It’s definitely something I have to work on.
A lot of the time, my session zero is more like a half session, then we’ll do something.
It’s how I ran the start of my Endless Sea game, but I don’t think I took enough on from the players with that session. I laid out my plan a bit and that was about it.

So far, just from these prompts, my next Session Zero is going to last for days.
