I’ve been trying for days to come up with a better topic than some of my favourite rare magic items from D&D 5e, but I think that will have to do!
So, I’m not going to focus too much on the ‘obvious’ items – the Handy Haversack, Portable Hole and Ring of Spell Storing are well known. I’m going to talk a bit about some of the items I just like from a flavour perspective.
Dancing Sword
I love the idea of throwing a sword into the air and having it attack my enemies. This is great for a two-handed weapon fighter, since they can use their bonus actions like the dual wielder would. I love the idea of giving it some kind of a personality too, maybe for interactions outside of combat.
Sunblade
It’s a lightsaber. Why wouldn’t you want your character to run around with one? I know it’s much better in an anti-undead campaign, but still. It’s fun.
Horn of Valhalla (slightly cheating, depending on the power of the Horn, but still)
You blow it an it summons spirits from Valhalla to fight for you (or fight against you, potentially. There’s a requirement for weapon training). This just sounds like a lot of fun, and with a wait of seven days before it’s used again, it makes people think seriously about using it.
Cube of Force
I like the idea of a tiny d6 being used to create a bubble around a user, and especially that you can stop spell effects with it. I think I’m going to give one out in the next appropriate treasure hoard, just to see how other players would use it.
