Late to the party: RPGaDay 2019 prompt 3

“Engage”

Sometimes I find it hard to engage with my players. Sometimes I find it hard to engage with a setting as a player.
It happens.

But I’m actively trying to do better at both.
With the pandemic happening, I’m taking some online training to upskill a little for work. Mostly it’s public speaking and interview skills – I feel like I’m always terrible at interviews no matter how confident I feel going in.
There’s a lot of ways I can use this stuff to work on my game-mastering and storytelling, which is great.

I’m also going to try and overcome one of my bigger hurdles next time I run a game – voices.
I’ve never felt great doing some of the silly acting with the games I run. I’ll occasionally put on an accent, but I’m not great at consistency.
The last in-person game I played in had a great DM who loved doing them though. It was a pleasure to watch and join in with it, so I’m going to give it a go for the first time in years.

I’m watching some great DMing videos on YouTube that should help too. Seems like in the last few years, the resources available have jumped up a gear. I’d certainly have loved to have even a fraction of this stuff available when I started running games twenty years ago.
I suppose I did have a fraction back then – all the printed advice in the rulebooks!
