Cantrip Tattoos

Whilst working on a project for domestic-leaning magic items and spells, I got to thinking about the magical tattoos presented in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, and specifically that the only usage of cantrips in tattoos was when they were being used in place of scrolls.

So I started looking at what makes the other tattoos work, what might be most useful from the list of cantrips from a utility point of view, and I also had a quick look at the Dragonmarks from Eberron, since they have a similar function. I’ve just about narrowed everything down to a few groupings, and I think I’d allow the cantrips to be cast a number of times per rest rather than wholly at will.

And then! I decided this was too much for the project I was already working on, and added it to my list of projects to make myself.
BUT, here’s a quick taster of where I’m at:

Tattoo of the Firedancer
Wondrous item (tattoo), uncommon (requires attunement)
Produced by a special needle, this magic tattoo features swirling flames and dancing figures.
Tattoo Attunement. To attune to this item, you hold the needle to your skin where you want the tattoo to appear, pressing the needle there throughout the attunement process. When the attunement is complete, the needle turns into the ink that becomes the tattoo, which appears on the skin.
If your attunement to the tattoo ends, the tattoo vanishes, and the needle reappears in your space.
Dancing Flames. While this tattoo is on your skin, you can cast the control flames cantrip. You are also able to cast create bonfire a number of times equal to your proficiency modifier. You regain these uses after finishing a long rest.
Additionally, as a reaction, you may gain resistance to fire damage until the start of your next turn.

I think it needs some work, but it’s definitely shaping in to something. I’ll be working through some other tattoo designs in the next while, so keep your eyes peeled for more information on that!
